Walt Disney knew that a strong story and compelling characters were two key factors in making a successful animated film. In the 1930s, he sought to make characters more engaging by giving them distinct personalities that could be conveyed by a character’s posture and movement alone. The 1933 Silly Symphony Three Little Pigs, featured in the museum’s Gallery 3, was one of the first animated cartoons to show characters who, despite looking alike, moved and behaved in unique ways. In this workshop, learn to use the elements of exaggeration, facial expression, and posture to animate a character who is a distinctive individual.
