Workshop | Introduction to Storyboarding with Storyboard Artist Christian Roman

Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a storyboard artist, but you aren’t sure where to start? Look no further than this intimate workshop with special guest Christian Roman. A veteran storyboard artist, Roman has worked on countless projects, ranging from The Simpsons to Disney and Pixar’s Elemental (2023). The workshop will provide instruction on the fundamentals of storyboarding and the key ingredients that make a visually clear narrative. Guests will then receive hands-on experience with industry-standard exercises that will propel them on their storyboarding journey.

Originally from Massachusetts, Christian Roman attended Boston University under a full Trustee Scholarship, graduating with a degree in Painting (CFA ’91). In his final year he realized his true passion was animation, he took an internship at a local Boston studio called Olive Jar Animation and learned how to do stop-motion animation on various MTV commercials. 

After graduating, Roman moved to Los Angeles, where his first big break was on The Simpsons. He started in layout, moved into storyboarding, then ultimately became the show's Storyboard Supervisor. While at that studio, he also directed episodes of The Twisted Tales of Felix the Cat and Mission Hill. Roman then went on to help create and direct two Disney Television Animation series: Fillmore! and American Dragon: Jake Long. While in Los Angeles, Roman served as a storyboard artist on many other productions, such as the Lilo & Stitch television series, an episode of HBO’s Happily Every After, King of the Hill, Superman: The Animated Series, and the direct-to-video animated feature sequel Kronk’s New Groove (2005). Roman’s last job in Los Angeles was storyboarding on The Simpsons Movie (2007), when he was approached by a friend working at Pixar if he would consider moving to San Francisco to work there.

Roman started at Pixar in 2007, working on Toy Story 3 (2010), every Toy Story short film and television special, Cars 3 (2017), Toy Story 4 (2019), Onward (2020), Luca (2021), an episode of Dug Days, and Elemental (2023). 

Since leaving Pixar in 2024, Roman has storyboarded for Aardman Animation, DreamWorks Animation, and 20th Century Animation. In September 2025, Roman began a new chapter working for Studio MDHR—the video game company that created Cuphead (2017). Roman lives with his wife, teenage daughter, and cat Minnie in El Cerrito, California.
