Animating on celluloid—or “cels” for short—can be traced back to the early 1900s when Winsor McCay was one of the first artists to pioneer the technique in his film The Sinking of the Lusitania (1918). By the 1930s, Walt Disney and his team used cel animation for all of their films and continued to do so until transitioning to computer-based animation decades later. In Gallery 3, see early examples of the Studios’ work with this new form of animation, which figured into works such as the Mickey shorts and the Silly Symphony series. After exploring the galleries, you will get the chance to experience cel animation in a hands-on environment: first, you will draw on paper, then ink those drawings onto cels in order to create a short, original animation.

This class has been rescheduled to Saturday, May 4, 2019.
