Diane Gets Married

“I think Dad relished every role he played in his life,” said his older daughter, Diane Disney Miller. “And father of the bride was a very important one, a very tender one.”

When Diane married Ron Miller on May 9, 1954, Walt was delighted. He described young Ron in a letter to his brother Herb as “a wonderful boy, a big athlete whom we all love.”

The wedding was small. Diane’s sister, Sharon, was the only attendant. Walt walked Diane down the aisle, and when they reached the altar, Diane recalled, she heard “a little sniffle” behind her. “I turned and he looked at me. I felt him squeeze my hand. It was his moment.”

When Diane and Ron’s first child was born, Walt was thrilled -- and completely ready for the new role of grandfather. “I can’t tell you how much fun he is,” he wrote his sister, Ruth. “We’re all crazy about him.”

The only disappointment was that the child wasn’t named for him, but Diane said she felt that “that’s a big name for a little guy to carry around.”
